Green Port Launch

The Samoa Ports Green Port Initiative (GPI) was officially launched by the Honourable Olo Fiti Afoa Vaai (MWRI) on Tuesday 7 November 2023, from 4pm at the SPA Matautu.

The Government of Samoa is undertaking a project to enhance the safety, security and sustainability of Apia Port. In addition to infrastructure upgrades, this project also includes the identification and implementation of Green Port Initiatives, to facilitate a transition to “Apia Green Port”. That is:

• • To optimise energy efficiency and adopt environmentally sustainable practices.

  • To be operationally efficient, safe and resilient to future challenges.

  • To enhance preventive and preparatory measures to ensure timely and effective response to disasters.

  • To institutionalise gender equity in green port operations.

At the launch, SPA’s Green Port Ambassadors – representing different departments within SPA, as well as the stevedores and the Samoan Shipping Corporation - were formally introduced. Their role is to raise awareness of green port issues and implement green campaigns.
